Addiction is a condition that results when a person consumes a substance or engages in an activity that can be enjoyable, but the continued use/act of which becomes compulsive. This can interfere with ordinary life responsibilities like work, relationships and health.

An affected person may not be aware that their behaviour is out of control and causing problems for themselves and others.

Addictive behaviour is often not only a physical condition. People often compulsively misuse substances or gamble in reaction to being emotionally stressed, whether or not they have a physical addiction.

Addiction treatment at Abbotsford is tailored to each person’s needs. It can involve a variety of approaches, including medication, therapy, family interventions, relapse prevention and stress management.

We place a strong focus on:

  • Providing support without shame or judgement.
  • Treating any trauma or illness perpetuating the addiction.

Abbotsford’s treatment programs have been developed by experienced mental health specialists to help people struggling with the impact of addiction. If addiction issues are affecting your day-to-day life, we can help.

We also offer support for families and loved ones of those suffering from an addiction or mental illness, through our Family & Carers’ Programs.

Daily Group

Offered daily, three-hour sessions, group therapy

Participants can attend this group as often as needed. The sessions are ideal for those who have not yet attended a therapy program, do not intend to join an intensive two-week program or have recently been discharged from hospital and need ongoing support.

Participants learn practical strategies to manage their addiction, avoid relapses and stay motivated to manage their progress. Basic cognitive skills, emotional regulation, active stopping strategies and tools for dealing with day-to-day problems are covered.

Two-Week Program

Two weeks, full days, group therapy

In this 10-session intensive program participants can develop a greater awareness of their addiction. Focus is placed on the dependency process, rather than a particular substance or behaviour. Participants will gain an understanding of the underlying reasons and the emotional factors that are maintaining the dependence. They will learn strategies from a range of psychological approaches.

This group is appropriate for participants who have a dependency on alcohol, illicit drugs, over-the-counter medication or another substance or behaviour.

Daily Group – Post Two-Week Program

Offered daily, three-hour sessions, group therapy

These sessions are ideal for patients who have completed an intensive therapy program or who have extensive therapy experience from group sessions. Participants explore factors that affect them in managing their addiction on a day-to-day basis.

Group members can raise issues that are affecting them in their daily lives and gain regular assistance and support in avoiding relapse.

Inpatient Programs

Inpatient programs at Abbotsford are tailored to individual need. Inpatient stays are approximately 14 days and daily group therapy is a vital part of treatment and therefore mandatory.

A GP referral to one of our accredited psychiatrists is required for an admission.
